Ashton Leger
MSN, RN, Auburn University

A Bit About Me.
My name is Ashton Leger. I will graduate from Auburn University in May, 2019 with a Masters of Science in Nursing, with which I am pursuing a career as a nurse educator as well as a nurse practitioner. I graduated from Auburn University in 2015 with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing and began my career in Alexander City, Alabama at Russell Medical Center as a OB/Pediatric nurse. After working there for one year, and being accepted into Auburn’s MSN program, I decided to move back home to Dothan, Alabama. Since returning home, I have been working at Flowers Hospital in the labor and delivery unit, where I also completed my undergraduate nursing preceptorship. I also work for Women’s Health Care, a local OBGYN office.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to work in the healthcare field. My mother has been a nurse my entire life and I grew up walking the halls of the very hospital I work for now. My love for nursing was solidified when I worked as a volunteer at Flowers Hospital in 2012. During my undergraduate clinical rotations, I became passionate about maternal and neonatal nursing, and have continued to advance my expertise in those areas.
During my first year of nursing, I discovered that I was also passionate about teaching. From nursing students, new hires, to new moms and dads, I truly loved being able to share my passion and knowledge with them all. I knew from the beginning of my baccalaureate education pursuit that I did not want to stop there. I have seen the changes in healthcare and the shortage of nursing educators and primary care providers. While some would consider it too soon, I decided to return to school and further my education to become a nurse educator and nurse practitioner. Auburn University was the top choice for me, as I feel that their School of Nursing adequately prepared me for the realistic realm of nursing and healthcare in my undergraduate studies.
I have been privileged to fulfill my childhood dream of becoming a healthcare professional and to share a unique gift with my patients and their family members. My experiences as a registered nurse have allowed me to work independently, as well as with a multidisciplinary healthcare team. I have been able to teach students, new hires, and new parents. These experiences have instilled in me a strong desire to advance my nursing education, providing me with new paths of personal satisfaction and growth. I hope to teach the OB classes at a local college, while also practicing as a nurse practitioner, specializing in women’s health.
